Spyderco Paramilitary 2 Review

If you are looking to use one of the finest knives out there, then be sure to read my Spyderco Paramilitary 2 review first. Why? Well, let’s just say the knife is tough, amazing, and has a beast of a blade. If you want to learn why, read on.

The Para Military provides the performance and reliability of Spyderco’s acclaimed Military model but in a more compact package. Two-thirds the size of the original Military, it boasts a flat-ground CPM-S30V blade with an easily indexed 14mm Spyderco Round Hole for gloved or large hands. Its handle is constructed of stainless steel liners nested into textured black G-10 scales. The Para Military’s black DLC-coated blade locks open by means of Spyderco’s proprietary Compression Lock–one of the strongest folding knife locks ever produced. Ergonomic curves in the handle profile lock the user’s hand securely in place, providing superior control and preventing slippage.

Blade

The Para 2 features a classic Spyderco drop point blade. It’s been given a full flat grind and is made from 3.5mm blade stock. The knife has a nice amount of belly, an excellent tip and has proven to be a tremendous slicer. Rounding things out is a well ground edge that came extremely sharp. I have found that this is a great knife for food prep. For example, I had to slice a lot of large ciabatta rolls, and the 3.4″ blade really made easy work of the task.

You have the option of a satin finish or a diamond like carbon (DLC) coating for the blade on your Paramilitary 2. Take a look what other customers say about the blade in the review section on the Amazon product page.

Design

The overall design of the PM2 is very Spyderco–curvy organic handle, saber shaped blade with large opening hole, and half and half finger choil.  The opening hole is significantly larger than any I have seen on a Spyderco, clocking in at glove friendly 14mm.  The end of the handle is very comfortable, shaped in a more ergonomic way than its predecessor.  The lanyard hole is positively huge, big enough to easily accept full 550 paracord.  There is a quad positionable pocket clip, G10 handles with nested and drilled out liners.

All of this combines to make a big knife that feels like a small knife in terms of its precision, but clearly had the durability that its size usually indicates. Go to Amazon to see all available color options.

.Fit and finish

The jimping on the finger choil was crooked. Also, the polish on the blade was uneven and patchy. Regardless of all this, the knife performs all its functions perfectly. After all, this is a tool to be used, not for primping over and polishing purposes.

Grip & Carry

The handle is also large enough for a more tactical grip with the hand back off the choil and the blade further forward and a precision grip, using the choil. The handle has been made oversized in order to throw the ratio of blade and handle off. The vinyl material is probably the toughest material that has been used on knives, which is quite admirable. Even though it is a tough knife, it is surprisingly lightweight. The nested liners also help in keeping it thin.

Steel

S30V is really quite nice.  Even after the vinyl floor experience, it was still razor sharp, easily popping off hairs.  It also sliced through brush and twigs easily.  The hard steel is aided by a very steep secondary level. In other words, it is a very good steel which has been used to its absolute best.

Grind

Spyderco really took advantage of the S30V steel’s hardness by putting a wickedly steep angle on the secondary grind.  This makes the knife slice better and it also makes it is considerably easier to sharpen.  The broad secondary bevel allows the blade to register up against the sharpening stones more completely ensuring a better and more consistent re-sharpening grind.

Spyderco Paramilitary 2 Review: Lock & deployment

Deployment on the Paramilitary 2 is accomplished via an oversized Spyder-hole. Deployment is incredibly, fast, smooth and consistent. This is a great knife to use with gloves and it ensures a smooth and effortless deployment with every flick. Backing up that oversized thumb hole is a pair of large phosphor bronze washers. These washers are very smooth and only get better as the knife breaks in. So deployment is just outstanding.

The Spyderco Paramilitary 2 makes use of a compression lock to hold the blade in place. The compression lock works by wedging a piece of the liner between the tang and a stop pin. As force is applied to the knife (from either the spine or the edge) the lock compresses and the sandwich of tang, liner and pin hold the blade firmly in place. The harder you push on the knife, the tighter the lock gets.

Final Thoughts:

This knife has been made of high-end materials and it can be relied for anything. This is definitely a knife that I would keep for a long time to come. This is truly an outstanding knife. The Paramilitary 2 sustains the classic version's usefulness and aesthetically pleasing edge, while achieving an even wider array of design features that adds to the expediency of this working man’s knife. Pragmatically designed, the ParaMilitary 2 pocket knife is unmatched, and only reaffirms that the technology used by Spyderco to create their knives is cutting edge and top of the line.
