Spyderco Tenacious Review

If you are looking for one of the best-selling knives in the past two years, then you really should give this Spyderco Tenacious Review a read. Amazon and the other major retailers keep announcing the sold out status of this knife every once in a while. That just goes on to show the buying power of the Tenacious. Is it the best spyderco? Well, let’s see.

When the Tenacious was first announced, the whole knife community was quite divided over this latest offering from Spyderco. This is because of the collaboration between a Chinese brand the ever popular Spyderco. However, some years later, it can be seen that Spyderco’s bet hedged quite well. It went on to become a best-selling knife, with all the units being sold out in a short span of time.

Spyderco Tenacious ReviewBeing tenacious means one holds fast. It means being tough and tireless until achieving your goal. These are all the knife-worthy definitions for a worthy knife. This mid-sized Tenacious Plain Edge Knife by Spyderco has a black G-10 laminate handle, milled with prolonged fatigue-free cutting in mind.

Tucked inside are skeletonized steel liners increasing the handle’s rigidity and strength without adding non-functioning weight or bulky thickness. The 8Cr13Mov stainless blade is leaf-shaped and ground flat from spine to cutting edge for cutting performance.

The blade’s shape coupled with an oversized Spyderco round hole and textured spine jimping allows you to open the blade and position your thumb on the spine in slip-proof confidence ready for work.

Spyderco Tenacious Review: The Blade

The blade of the Tenacious is quite satisfactory. It is sleek and thin but still strong. I was happy with the fact that Spyderco had texturized the top of the blade. This allows the user to gain more control while gripping the knife.

A little bit of extra spine has also been added in the back to make it stronger. The steel being provided is also very good for the price. However, even though the blade has been made of stainless, steel, it is not rust-proof. This turns out to be quite a bummer.

The full flat grind on the knife is also quite admirable. It is small, just like a kitchen knife which makes it great for slicing. This is especially through when slicing through cardboard. The shape is fairly generic, but there is enough strength for carrying out EDC tasks.

Ergonomics, handle, and pocket clip

The handle is a of pillar construction, which I really like because it makes the knife easy to clean. The handle is layers of steel with G10 scales. The steel has been milled out to reduce the weight, which is a great touch that I love to see on a cheaper knife. The G10 is lightly textured and feels good. It isn’t super abrasive so your pockets will be spared, but it offers nice tactile feedback. I haven’t had any problems with the knife slipping out of my hand, probably because the ergonomics are so good. The G10 has been contoured around the liner lock and there is very good jimping on the thumb ramp and the lock. This makes the knife very easy and comfortable to use.

The ergonomics on the Tenacious are quite good. It has a pretty big handle and it has been well designed. Also the knife is designed to provide the user good traction, which I find to be important for a mid-sized folding EDC knife like this. The large thumb ramp and jimping really helps keep your thumb in place and maintain control when putting some power behind the blade.

Pocket clips can be a problem with expensive knives, let alone cheap ones, so I was really pleased with the clip on the Tenacious. It’s a signature Spyderco Hourglass shaped clip that provides good pocket retention without shredding your pants up. Also the clip is mountable on all 4 corners of the knife, so you can carry this knife in your left or right pocket, tip up or tip down.

Lock up and deployment

The deployment on the Tenacious is quite nice. The Spyderhole makes it easy to access the blade with gloves or even bare hands. The action is smooth because of the bronzer brushings. The lock on the knife is pretty solid. It uses a thick liner lock which bites into the blade.

  • Signature Spyderco Hourglass shaped pocket clip

Final Thoughts

The Spyderco Tenacious EDC knife boasts of quality construction and is extremely comfortable. Some of its weaknesses include the less than stellar steel when compared with the other knives. However, this can be easily solved by regular oiling, cleaning, and sharpening. So if you are looking for a new pocketknife, then you should definitely pick up a Tenacious.
